...He emerged from that hole in the ground, into a wakin' nightmare. Everything that wasn't gone was twisted upside down. The world was frozen, air thick with ash. What few faces he saw on the street stared back at him with gray and vacant eyes. He found his wife-to-be asleep in her home. But when he reached out to her, she joined with all the ashes in the sky.
And so Zulf returned to where he proposed in the Hanging Gardens. And there he stood, as if the gods would answer him...
- Who Knows Where #3, Bastion
-----------------------------------------------
...He was on top of the world; his mission to unite the Ura and Caelondians was taking shape, his desire to travel the land and see the city had come true, he even found love there, proposed and was accepted. He had everything. A whole life of happiness, fulfillment and companionship lay ahead of him.
And then the Calamity took everything. From the highest peak of elation to the deepest, darkest valley of loss, falling like the stones that once made up the land around him...

Bought HIB5 last week, immediately played through Bastion.
SO AMAZING
I AM LISTENING TO THE SOUNDTRACK ON REPEAT NOW
Anyhow, I didn't really care for Zulf in my first playthrough though I did choose to save him. After, though, I started listening to the soundtrack in earnest, got hooked on "Mother, I'm Here (Zulf's Theme)". Youtube: [link] Liked the tune, didn't really get the lyrics though.
Then I stumbled on [link]. "...My approach for this one was to write a song that might be sung at funerals in the world of the game."
Yeah, that's definitely true, they're borderline creepy-large. Though I think making them smaller might make them hard to view in non-full-view mode, which I think most people use.
When his backstory was fully explained, I suddenly felt something for Zulf. He was on top of the world; his mission to unite the Ura and Caelondians was taking shape, his desire to travel the land and see the city had come true, he even found love there, proposed and was accepted. He had everything. A whole life of happiness, fulfillment and companionship lay ahead of him.
And then the Calamity took everything. From the highest peak of elation to the deepest, darkest valley of loss, falling like the stones that once made up the land around him. And, upon playing through the game on New Game+, the moment his song started playing, I... I choked up.
This piece captures Zulf's past perfectly. And when I say that, I mean "there is no other way than this to encapsulate his tragedy in a single image". The pain you captured on his face makes my soul ache for him. In the most emotionally compelling way.
Wow, you did an amazing job of putting the whole situation into words. Damn near poetic. In fact, I feel like I understand it even more now. I'm going to add your description (credited) to the image description if you don't mind
The lyrics killed me when I had listened to them on repeat for half a day.

I'd argue that the silhouette figure's smiles are a bit too large for their features, but the concept you were aiming for is still effective.

I can't favorite this enough.

I an unworthy of your praise.
